There are an estimated 4.5 million people living with diabetes in the UK*.

Visit our pharmacy for a free diabetes test.

For more information on Type 2 diabetes visit NHS Type 2 diabetes

What happens in a type 2 diabetes screening?

The service will take place in a private consultation room by a trained member of staff. You will be asked a series of questions in order to help determine whether you are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, including:

    • Your age
    • Your height, weight and waist measurement
    • Your daily activity
    • Your diet, in particular how many fruit and vegetables you eat
    • If you use high blood pressure medication
    • If you have ever had a high blood glucose reading
    • If any family member has diabetes

If you are at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, we can advise you on how to slow or even reduce your risk of developing the condition. If you are at high risk, we will measure your blood pressure and your blood glucose level, by taking a very small finger-prick sample of blood.

Depending on the results of this test, we may ask you to come back for further assessment. This will include:

    • A fasting blood glucose test, which involves taking a sample of blood when you have an empty stomach (usually first thing in the morning before you have breakfast)
    • Weight, height and waist measurement
    • Additional blood pressure measurements
    • We will also offer you lifestyle advice and recommend ways of reducing your chance of developing Type 2 Diabetes. If appropriate, we may refer you to your doctor.

  • STOP SMOKING CLINICS

Nearly 1 in 5 adults smoke and there are around 90,000 regular smokers aged between 11 and 15. Smoking causes 17% of all deaths in people aged 35 and over. The following information shows what we know works to help people stop smoking so we can get to a tobacco-free generation by 2025.*

Visit our pharmacy for a free stop smoking clinics.

For more information on why you should stop smoking visit NHS Quit smoking.

If you are in need of one-to-one support, visit Village pharmacy Cosby or Narborough for our Stop Smoking Service. We can offer advice to help you every step of the way.

    Why you should quit smoking:

Smoking poses a huge risk to your health. So huge, in fact, that it’s accountable for 80,000 deaths in England each year.** Parts of your body that can be negatively affected by smoking include:

    • Your blood – toxins from cigarette smoke enter the blood and increase the chance of clot formation, increase blood pressure and narrow the arteries – these are all the factors that can lead to a heart attack, stroke, and coronary heart disease!
    • The lungs – from minor ailments such as coughs, colds and wheezing, to more serious diseases such as pneumonia, emphysema and lung cancer. Smoking causes 84% of deaths from lung cancer.**
    • Smoking can lead to many different forms of cancer, including cancer of the lips, tongue, oesophagus, stomach and kidney.
    • It can also affect areas of your body you wouldn’t expect, such as causing male impotence, reducing female fertility and even making your bones weak and brittle.
    • Finally, there are the changes to your appearance, including: the premature ageing of your skin, stained teeth, gum disease and tooth loss. It can also cause damage to the sense of your taste and bad breath.

If the health impacts weren’t enough, smoking is also a massive drain on your money. It is so important to get all the help and encouragement necessary to quit. We know it’s not easy, but our trained specialists are here for you.

How can our Stop Smoking Service help?

You will be able to discuss your smoking goals with a trained member of staff, who will be able to offer advice on how best to achieve them. We have private consultation rooms available if you wish to chat in confidence.

Our helpful staff will offer support and advice on:

    • Boosting your willpower
    • Avoiding triggers
    • Controlling your cravings
    • Managing withdrawal symptoms

    Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Self-control alone may not be enough to help you stop smoking straightaway, which is completely fine. Though it is not entirely risk free, Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is an effective way to help you get started, by managing your cravings and supporting your addiction.

During the private consultation, our staff member will be able to recommend any suitable Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products

  • ANNUAL MEDICINE CHECK UPS

Studies have shown that half of us may not be taking our prescribed medicines correctly and could be putting our own health at risk without even realising it.**

Visit Village pharmacy cosby or narborough for a FREE Medicines Check Up, which involves a private consultation with our pharmacist to help you understand whether you are taking your medicines properly.

What is a Medicines Check Up?

It's a free, NHS-funded service that allows you to have a private, face-to-face conversation with our pharmacist about your medicines. It is different to an annual review with your doctor, as it focuses on increasing your knowledge of the medicines you take, why you take them and how you can take them more easily.

This service is helpful for you if you are taking multiple medicines, particularly for long term conditions. This usually includes asthma and other lung conditions (such as COPD, chronic bronchitis and emphysema), diabetes, high blood pressure, and conditions where the medicine controls the way your blood clots (anticoagulants or antiplatelet medication).

What happens during the Medicines Check Up?

The pharmacist will ask you a series of questions about the medicines you are taking. You will also have the opportunity to ask the pharmacist any questions that you may have. It might be worth noting down some questions before your appointment.

By the end of your Medicines Check Up you should:

    • Know more about your medicines and what they do
    • Have learnt the best way to take your medicines
    • Fully understand how your medicines are working to benefit your health

You will be asked to give your consent that any information obtained during the Medicines Check Up Service may be shared with your GP, local health board or NHS Business Service.

How can the Medicines Check Up help?

A Medicines Check Up can benefit patients who take prescribed medicines everyday if:

    • You are not sure how and when to take your medicines, i.e. before or after food, in the morning or evening
    • You are not sure what your medicines do
    • Your symptoms are not under control
    • You are experiencing side effects
    • You find it difficult to take or swallow your medicines
    • You have difficulty removing your medicines from their packaging
    • You have been on the same medicines for a long period of time

A Medicines Check Up is particularly important if:

    • You have recently been in hospital and have had your medicine changed (in the last 8 weeks)
    • You take medicines for breathing problems (such as asthma / COPD)
    • You take water tablets
    • You take medicines to thin your blood
    • You take anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen
